Basic Ground Work

In this video, Karen introduces a new yield to Teo in order to demonstrate how she uses both Positive and Negative Reinforcement. (Negative Reinforcement means that a pressure is added and when the horse yields to it, it is released. Positive Reinforcement means a reward is given after the desired result). Karen will show how she combines these two methods in order to help the horse understand what is being asked, and to thank him for his efforts. Sometimes these terms can be 'hot button' terms. Karen’s goal here is to show that they are both just tools in the tool box that we can use to help communicate with our horses.
Karen describes her reasoning for when to use each in the circumstance of teaching this yield. You can use this concept in other circumstances, and can adapt and change it depending on what the horse needs in the moment!
