Watch as Karen coaches a student who is having trouble with a horse that is very good at running out his shoulders. The rider has a habit of using the inside rein in turns, and this only compounds the problem. The rider learns to guide the horse from the outside of his body, and the horse finds a new balance and straightness, This can be a very challenging dynamic to change, and this rider does a super job. I could have made it shorter but I wanted to give you the chance to see the different phases it went through. You will see video over 4 consecutive days.
This video is great for any rider who has felt that their horse drifts or runs through the outside shoulder, and the more they try to turn, the more the horse leaks out! The skill of being able to ride without needing your inside rein is a skill that will serve you well all the way up the levels, especially in collection where it is so important to not let the horse over-bend his neck in front of his shoulders. Over-using the inside rein is one of the most common problems I see.
