In this video, you will see Karen coach a rider and horse over 3 sessions to improve their foundational balance and impulsion. This is an experienced rider with a horse who she is transitioning to being ridden after being a driving horse. The horse has only had a rider a few times, and did not previously do any cantering when driving.
The horse tends to fall forward and accelerates while becoming heavy in the reins. Karen will show them some 'go to' exercises that work amazingly fast. At the end of these sessions the rider told Karen she expected this kind of progress to take months!
This is fun to watch because the horse is thinking and clever. The impulsiveness is not from being emotional, but rather a combination of physical habits of imbalance plus lack of education from the saddle.
The exercises you will see would be good for any horse who tends to get 'rolling along' and can also be used for horses who do get impulsive due to emotion/anxiety.
