A Close Look At Throughness In Self Carriage - March 2022
16m
In this video, we take a close up look at throughness and what it looks like in motion. You’ll see clips from a lesson I took on Ovation with Luis Lucio where he had me do a technique of his. I am experimenting with a different bit on Ovation and I am quite happy with how he likes it. Typically he does not like snaffles but he is having a positive response to this Bomber Bit Happy Tongue snaffle. Ovation is schooling Grand Prix movements, but finding and maintaining the 'just right' connection and balance in his body has always been the hardest part with him. He has a naturally big pushing hind leg, and does not have a lot of natural lift through his withers.
The technique Luis has me doing involves quite obvious arm movements, so it will be very clear for you to see when I am asking for more, and when I am in Active Neutral. I think you will find this very helpful. For anyone else out there with educated horses who still think finding the 'Sweet Spot of collection and throughness' is challenging ... you are not alone!
